The Neverending Story
Contents
Introduction
It has been difficult to know exactly what to say of such an epitome of a life work. You have invented a new kind of autobiography. It is a kind of autobiography in a performance of marionettes. You have become the puppeteer of your past.
Walter Arensberg, upon receipt of a deluxe edition of Boîte-en-Valise in 1942, to Marcel Duchamp
Because this project involves setting up output for large-scale printing, we run it side by side with the Variations large print project, which involves a large and uniquely formatted physical print. This gives us the experience of managing multiple jobs at once—a critical life skill—and in a live studio version of the course, this allows us to access the large format printing capabilities at our school, saving schlepping and post-production time.
Objectives
After completing this project you will be able to:
- use the visual principles of sequence, repetition, unity, and tension
- understand and use the concepts of hierarchy, rules and randomness
- use InDesign as a means to compile work created in other programs
- understand the reciprocal relationship between work and portfolio
- create a file for print output that successfully generates a tactile book
- create a link between physical and digital iterations of a portfolio using a QR code
