toxic\u00a0<strong>social<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>liability<\/strong>, not an asset. I deleted my Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Twitter accounts. If you share this concern, speak to me! I will not force anyone to travel in shark-infested waters that I avoid.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cloud_archive_and_backup\"><\/span>Cloud archive and backup<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably use one or more of the cloud archiving services I listed, and you should of course use whatever you&#8217;re comfortable with. But,\u00a0for our studios at school, we use the\u00a0<strong>limitless free storage<\/strong>\u00a0available at\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pennstateoffice365-my.sharepoint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OneDrive<\/a><\/strong>. It&#8217;s hard to beat free, right? If you otherwise don&#8217;t have access to an institutional account, you can string together all the free-level storage at various services. Altogether, in the list above, minus OneDrive, I have about 100GB of free cloud storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Working_with_OneDrive\"><\/span>Working with OneDrive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>OneDrive can host a&nbsp;<strong>Digital Archive<\/strong>&nbsp;as a long-term, publicly-facing retrieval system for your files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-100 is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/pennstateoffice365-my.sharepoint.com\/:f:\/g\/personal\/wrc11_psu_edu\/EvRTLSDHGP1NrI0L1nsgZrEBwjuAOv1LYRkg7lK4Oq1i-g?e=XZgahm\" style=\"background-color:#bbbbbb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>See an example of an archive here<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice three things about this archive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1 Logical folder structure<\/strong>&nbsp;| Open a few folders. Note how each folder contains all the work for one project, with some containing sub-folders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2 Rich file naming<\/strong>&nbsp;| Note the names of folders and files. These names serve an important archiving purpose: to reveal the contents before you open something. It&#8217;s a survival skill. You won&#8217;t regret a good file name, ever. Some good conventions for rich file naming include:<ul><li>The digits: these indicate the date created<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>lastname<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>projectname<\/strong>&nbsp;are self-explanatory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>.ext<\/strong>&nbsp;is a file extension like .jpg or .pdf<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alphanumerics only. Avoid special characters&nbsp;<strong>&nbsp;!\u201c:;&lt;=&gt;?@[]^`{|}~<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NO spaces. Use an underscore _ or a hyphen &#8211; instead, or use a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camel_case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">camelBack<\/a>\u00a0convention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use lowercase letters only (for consistency) unless camelBacking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>3 Completeness<\/strong>\u00a0| Specifically this means to keep\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0the files associated with a work. One will be the original authoring file, like a\u00a0<strong>.ai<\/strong>\u00a0file in Adobe Illustrator. From this, you may have exported versions to a\u00a0<strong>.jpg<\/strong>\u00a0or<strong>\u00a0.png<\/strong>\u00a0image. Archive\u00a0<strong>all<\/strong>\u00a0versions and file extensions! In some studios, files in certain software are cloud-based and live on a server. To &#8220;archive&#8221; cloud-based works, you can create a link in OneDrive. Click the\u00a0<strong>+New<\/strong>\u00a0button and select the\u00a0<strong>Link<\/strong>\u00a0icon to open a field where you can paste a link.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-2-1_Backup_strategy\"><\/span>3-2-1&nbsp;Backup strategy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This\u00a0digital archive\u00a0is also a\u00a0<strong>backup<\/strong>\u00a0device.\u00a0There are three kinds of people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People who&nbsp;<strong>have lost work<\/strong>&nbsp;because they didn\u2019t back it up\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those who&nbsp;<strong>will lose work<\/strong>&nbsp;because they haven\u2019t backed it up, and\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Folks who&nbsp;<strong>don\u2019t lose work<\/strong>&nbsp;because they&nbsp;back it up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be that third person! Backup is essential to protect from loss or file corruption. Lost work is like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_dog_ate_my_homework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital dog eating your homework<\/a>, so it won\u2019t get you off the hook for a project deadline. But, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_content_management_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">web content management system<\/a>, a person with very little knowledge of coding can create a beautiful and functional web presence. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_content_management_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dozens of CMS offerings<\/a>, which vary in their expectations for user&#8217;s technical savvy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, out of all of these CMS options, we like <strong>WordPress<\/strong> for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>WordPress accommodates a range of users, from novice authors to advanced coders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_and_open-source_software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free and open source<\/a>, providing wide latitude for use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And it&#8217;s popular: <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.builtwith.com\/cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly a third<\/a> of the top 1 million websites in the world use it as a CMS, so when potential employers <a href=\"https:\/\/enhancv.com\/resume-skills\/wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see WP as a skill listed on your resume<\/a>, they take notice!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As with any other CMS, there are some downsides. People confuse <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WordPress.org<\/a> (the site for acquiring the software for use on a personal server) with <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WordPress.com<\/a> (a hosting site for blogs), and the difference between the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberchimps.com\/blog\/gutenberg-vs-classic-wordpress-editor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">word-processor-ish Classic Editor and the block-based Gutenberg Editor<\/a> has created a stir in the community. WordPress can be frustrating to an advanced coder who wishes for greater customization opportunities. And it has a bit of a learning curve for beginners. For all that, every one of the sites I created and listed above \u2014 including this one \u2014 is built with WordPress and hosted on a server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the server is the tricky part! Fortunately, if you&#8217;re in school, you often don&#8217;t have to worry about setting up and maintaining a server. After the creative projects, your site is the single most important artifact in our studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">STEP 1: New site<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be creating a new site, or you may use an existing site (in which case skip to the next step). With&nbsp;<strong>Sites&nbsp;<\/strong>open, find and select the&nbsp;<strong>Create a Site&nbsp;<\/strong>button to start a fresh site:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Type in a&nbsp;<strong>Site Address<\/strong>&nbsp;(a.k.a. the URL). Choose wisely as this cannot change! We recommend choosing a flexible name, not one specific to this course. There are thousands of sites under the&nbsp;<strong>sites.psu.edu<\/strong>&nbsp;domain, so be prepared with a logical alternate if it warns&nbsp;<strong>Sorry, that site already exists!<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type in a&nbsp;<strong>Site Title<\/strong>. Here, we will customize. Customizing means you are designing the User Interface, or UI, of the site:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CHOOSE A THEME<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Dashboard &gt; Appearance &gt; Themes<\/strong>&nbsp;to open the selector window and choose a theme.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid older themes like&nbsp;<strong>Twenty Sixteen<\/strong>&nbsp;that have limited functionality. Don&#8217;t worry, you can change anytime!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for a simple theme that won&#8217;t compete with your content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CUSTOMIZE THE THEME<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Dashboard &gt; Appearance &gt; Customize<\/strong>&nbsp;to open a special new dashboard menu. This menu changes from theme to theme.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under&nbsp;<strong>Site Identity<\/strong>, confirm your blog&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong>Site Title<\/strong>&nbsp;(you can change it anytime), and change the&nbsp;<strong>Tagline<\/strong>&nbsp;to something more personal than the &#8220;Just another whatever&#8221; boilerplate text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Dashboard &gt; Appearance &gt; Widgets<\/strong>&nbsp;and observe widgets\u2014blocks of functionality adjacent to the main content\u2014which your&nbsp;theme has installed by default. Available widgets are to the left, and installed widgets are to the right. We don&#8217;t need a lot:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep\u00a0<strong>Meta<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Categories<\/strong>, and delete all the other widgets. Open a widget by clicking on its arrow, and selecting\u00a0<strong>Delete<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among the available widgets, find and select&nbsp;<strong>Links<\/strong>&nbsp;and add it to the area adjacent to your&nbsp;<strong>Meta<\/strong>&nbsp;widget.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have the option of placing widgets in a&nbsp;<strong>Footer<\/strong>&nbsp;area, always do this. Avoid the clutter of&nbsp;<strong>Sidebars<\/strong>&nbsp;whenever possible.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ELIMINATE &#8220;BOILERPLATE&#8221;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Dashboard &gt; Posts &gt; All Posts<\/strong>&nbsp;and observe a list of posts. You&#8217;ll see one named &#8220;Hello World!&#8221; Delete this post or change it to private!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now select&nbsp;<strong>Dashboard &gt; Pages &gt; All Pages<\/strong>&nbsp;and observe a list of pages. You&#8217;ll see one named &#8220;Sample Page.&#8221; Delete this page or change it to private!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CREATE A TEST POST<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Dashboard &gt; Posts &gt; Add New<\/strong>. This will open a new post editor window, where you can create an &#8220;About Me&#8221; post:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Under&nbsp;<strong>Add Title<\/strong>, write a logical title.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the main content area, observe two tabs:&nbsp;<strong>Visual<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Text<\/strong>. Using the&nbsp;<strong>Visual<\/strong>&nbsp;tab allows you to write like a simple word processor, with familiar text formatting options. Write a text&nbsp;to introduce yourself very briefly to your audience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for a function called&nbsp;<strong>Categories<\/strong>&nbsp;to the right (or below) the content editor. Find and select&nbsp;<strong>+ Add New Category<\/strong>&nbsp;and type&nbsp;<strong>About<\/strong>, then select the&nbsp;<strong>Add New Category<\/strong>&nbsp;button below that. This will automatically select your newly created&nbsp;<strong>About<\/strong>&nbsp;category.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find and select the&nbsp;<strong>Publish<\/strong>&nbsp;tab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit the blog URL in Canvas. There are hundreds of options for image or video hosting, finding and sharing code snippets, or showing off your newest work online. How do you choose intelligently? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s no one-size-fits-all answer to that question. Do you&nbsp;<strong>own your search<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It sounds narcissistic but it&#8217;s not: open up an Incognito window and do a Google search for your name. How much of this search do you &#8220;own?&#8221; Do&nbsp;<em>YOU<\/em>&nbsp;show up, or does some impostor who shares your name? How can you stand out, especially if you have a common name like Smith? It&#8217;s so pervasive that some people think&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/swlh\/in-the-developing-world-facebook-is-the-internet-14075bfd8c5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook is the internet<\/a>. Powerful portals like Facebook have come under scrutiny of late for scandalous practices relating to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/terranovasecurity.com\/data-privacy-scandal-facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data sharing and privacy<\/a>, a debate rages about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sur.conectas.org\/en\/is-social-media-good-or-bad-for-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threat social media poses to democracy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/twitter-not-even-elon-musk-is-wealthy-enough-to-bring-absolute-free-speech-to-the-platform-heres-why-181981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discussions of regulation<\/a>&nbsp;will no doubt lead to changes in the way we interact with social media. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But there is no doubt that social media is here to stay as a cultural force.\u00a0Social media is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artworkarchive.com\/blog\/how-social-media-is-changing-our-art-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reinventing the terms of exchange between the artist and their audience<\/a>. An artist can use this arm of the web in many ways. Social media platforms\u00a0can propagate your work. A<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/creation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook Page<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(as opposed to your personal<\/em> <em>feed) is recommended for creators who want a professional presence. LinkedIn may feel a bit unhip, but people<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/getting-a-job-through-linkedin-2014-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">get gigs there<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 I got my job at PSU that way!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Social media is a very personal choice, so I won&#8217;t prescribe or recommend anything here. I will disclose that I recently permanently deleted anything to do with Mark Zuckerberg \u2014 a hard choice for a new media artist. For this course, integrating social media into your intranet will help promote your site and work. However: if you find social media to be too toxic to handle, or have personal reasons not to engage with it, just let me know that. You don&#8217;t need to tell me why<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Putting_it_all_together\"><\/span>Putting it all together<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For my intranet, I made sure that all these things talk to each other by creating links from each one to all the others. From my image hosting platform, I have a link to my portfolio site, and vice versa. I&#8217;ve created a mini-web crisscrossing the internet that we can call an&nbsp;<strong>intranet<\/strong>. This little intranet allows me to be seen as a professional anytime anyone searches for content like mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"background-color:#c8e1fa\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your_Task_Link_up_your_intranet\"><\/span>Your Task: Link up your intranet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve made decisions about hosting and social sites to include in your intranet, do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to your new process journal blog in&nbsp;<strong>Sites@PSU<\/strong>&nbsp;and open the&nbsp;<strong>Dashboard<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<strong>Dashboard&nbsp;<\/strong>find<strong>&nbsp;Links<\/strong>&nbsp;and open&nbsp;<strong>All Links<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You&#8217;ll see a bunch of propaganda links for Edublogs. An all-in-one host and content management system (CMS) is one option we&#8217;ve already explored. This will introduce you to HTML5, the first of three &#8220;languages&#8221; you&#8217;ll learn to speak in web coding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hello_Server\"><\/span>Hello Server<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your first little website will be developed on your personal computer and loaded up to the school server, a process that can have a lot of variation based on the institution, so I won&#8217;t detail that here. But generally, you&#8217;ll need a server account set up for you and a way to get your site from your computer to the server. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/download.php?type=server\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>FileZilla<\/strong><\/a> is a free, open source program that allows you to upload files to a server using the <strong>File Transfer Protocol<\/strong>, or FTP. Some may prefer (or require) a <strong>Secure FTP<\/strong> or SFTP. Configuration of the connection varies from setup to setup, so this is something you&#8217;ll go over in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hello_TEMPLATED\"><\/span>Hello TEMPLATED<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have a server account and an FTP uploader, you can develop your site. But wait: some of you don&#8217;t know how to code!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t matter. Whether this is your first time creating a site from scratch, or you&#8217;ve written HTML before, using a <strong>template<\/strong> is a smart move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, let&#8217;s take a look at a sample website that was created using a template: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-100\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/williamcromar.com\/code_samples\/templatedVisualize\/\" style=\"background-color:#bbbbbb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Sample templated website<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I acquired this template at a website that offers Creative Commons licensed free templates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-100\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/templated.co\/\" style=\"background-color:#bbbbbb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Visit templated.co<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At Templated, I selected <strong>Visualize<\/strong> as a simple, one-page gallery-style page. You may choose the same one if you want to emulate the instructions below in a precise step-by-step fashion, or you can be more adventurous and try a different one \u2014 the process will be similar either way. You&#8217;ll establish ONE folder where all your website work will live, and this is called the root folder or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Root_directory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">root directory<\/a>. You know all those slashes you see in a URL? They indicate a directory structure. The root is the &#8220;\/\/&#8221; in the URL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Establish the root on your local machine and move your folder there:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On a Mac, you&#8217;ll move it to <strong>Macintosh HD &gt; Users &gt; yourusername &gt; sites<\/strong>. Move your unzipped folder into <strong>sites<\/strong>, and rename the unzipped folder <strong>public<\/strong>. That will be the root of your site from now on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If on a PC, create a folder with a logical, simple, lower-case-and-no-spaces name anywhere you like, but make sure it&#8217;s in a place it will always stay. In other words, if you put it on your Desktop, make sure it always stays there. Move your unzipped folder into this, and rename the unzipped folder <strong>public<\/strong>. That will be the root of your site from now on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s transform the template. You can do it even if you don&#8217;t know HTML!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"background-color:#c8e1fa\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#c8e1fa\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your_Task_From_the_template_you_YOUR_site\"><\/span>Your Task: From the template you YOUR site<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeing extensions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we begin, you&#8217;ll want to set things up so you can see the full file name, including the extension&#8230; that .jpg or .html at the end of the name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On Windows computers, you might have trouble seeing the extensions, because Windows has an option called\u00a0<strong>Hide extensions for known file types<\/strong>\u00a0turned on by default. Generally, you can turn this off by going to Windows Explorer, selecting the\u00a0<strong>Folder options\u2026<\/strong>\u00a0option, unchecking the\u00a0<strong>Hide extensions for known file types<\/strong>\u00a0check box, and then clicking\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in <strong>MacOS<\/strong>, extensions are hidden by default but you can show them:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To show globally, open <strong>Finder<\/strong> and in the Menu choose <strong>Finder&nbsp;&gt; Settings<\/strong>, then click the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> tab to select <strong>Show all filename extensions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To show individually, click once on the file so as to select but not open it, the hit COMMAND+I (the capital letter &#8220;I&#8221;) to open <strong>Info<\/strong>. Under <strong>Name &amp; Extension<\/strong>, uncheck the <strong>Hide extension<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Image tricks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change the background image<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first image trick will be to change the background image:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the root folder, double-click on the&nbsp;<strong>index.html<\/strong>&nbsp;file, and it opens in a browser window. Observe the file looks the same as the demo on the web.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return to the root folder, open the&nbsp;<strong>images<\/strong>&nbsp;folder and note the presence of files with names like&nbsp;<strong>avatar.jpg<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>bg.jpg<\/strong>, and sub-folders with names like&nbsp;<strong>fulls<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>thumbs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The background image is named&nbsp;<strong>bg.jpg<\/strong>&nbsp;in the Visualize package; it may be something similar in another template. Find a suitable image among your own work and make a copy of it in the images folder, then delete the background image file and rename your new image <strong><em>the same name as that deleted file<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return to the browser window and hit refresh. If you did it correctly, you&#8217;ll see the new background image. If not, go back and check the name you gave it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change the contents of the image folder<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Our second image trick will be to change the folder of images:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the sub-folder with images (named&nbsp;<strong>fulls<\/strong>&nbsp;in the Visualize package). You&#8217;ll see a group of images with numerical or similarly ordered names (01.jpg, 02.jpg, etc., in Visualize). Find images of your own work to copy into this folder, and rename your images with exactly the same names as the existing images, which you will delete.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return to the Images folder and determine if there is a thumbnails folder (it&#8217;s called&nbsp;<strong>thumbs<\/strong>&nbsp;in Visualize). Open it and you&#8217;ll see the same images with the same names as you found in the&nbsp;<strong>fulls<\/strong>&nbsp;folder (or equivalent in your template). Return to the images folder and delete the&nbsp;<strong>thumbs<\/strong>&nbsp;folder altogether.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy the&nbsp;<strong>fulls<\/strong>&nbsp;folder (or its equivalent) and rename it&nbsp;<strong>thumbs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return to the browser window and refresh. All your images have changed, and when you click on them, a lightbox image pops open.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our final image trick will be to change any other images you find in the template in the same manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Text tricks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, to change text:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On a Mac. you don&#8217;t have a lightweight text editor to work on .html, visit and download&nbsp;<strong>TextMate<\/strong>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/macromates.com\/\">https:\/\/macromates.com\/<\/a>. It&#8217;s free and open source! On Windows, use the old reliable&nbsp;<strong>Notepad<\/strong>. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>TextEdit Users: if you are using Mac TextEdit, to see HTML files as code, in the menu TextEdit&gt;Preferences, select the Open and Save tab, and check ON &#8220;Display HTML files as HTML code etc.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find index.html again, right-click and in the contextual dropout menu select&nbsp;<strong>Open With&gt;TextMate&nbsp;<\/strong>or other text editor software.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are new to code, this looks really intimidating, but it&#8217;s pretty simple as we won&#8217;t be changing any code\u2014we&#8217;ll only be changing the text the code is marking up. Look in the browser window at the first text displayed (in Visualize, it&#8217;s &#8220;This is Visualize, a responsive site&#8230;&#8221; etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return to the TextEdit window with the code and use COMMAND+F to open a Find field. In this field, type in the first couple of words you saw in the browser. TextEdit will reveal its location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the entire block of original text in this first area, and replace it with your name. Save the file (COMMAND+S), return to the browser window, hit refresh, and if done correctly, your name will replace the text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find any other text areas you want to replace and do the same thing. In the modified footer, we kept the link back to TEMPLATED, which we are required to do according to our CC-BY license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hiding stuff and wrapping up<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Final option for the adventurous who wish to &#8220;hide&#8221; stuff:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lastly, if you wish, find any content areas you wish to &#8220;delete&#8221; from view. In Visualize, there are a group of social media icons we don&#8217;t want to use quite yet. Instead of finding all this code and deleting it, we&#8217;re going to use a simple trick to hide it. Look for a special code called a&nbsp;<strong>comment<\/strong>&nbsp;that looks like this:&nbsp;<strong><code>&lt;!--<\/code><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Copy the <code>&lt;!--<\/code> and paste it in front of the element you wish to hide. In Visualize, we pasted it in front of a line of code: <code>&lt;ul class=\"icons\"&gt;<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now go search for another special code that closes&nbsp;<strong>comment<\/strong>&nbsp;and looks like this: <code>--&gt;<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy it, and paste it behind the last element you wish to hide. In Visualize, we pasted it after a line of code: <code>&lt;\/ul&gt;<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save and return to the browser and hit return. The icons disappear!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you &#8220;break&#8221; the code at any time, don&#8217;t worry. Simply unzip the download and replace the index.html for a fresh start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FileZilla<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When finished, we&#8217;ll use FileZilla to upload the new site to your new server. The variables here can be vast, so we&#8217;ll go over the specifics of this live in the studio.
