Your approach to new media will develop out of heuristics like finding and using software tutorials, genre research, or deeper dives into art theory. Such heuristics use self-educating techniques such as the evaluation of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/feedback\">feedback<\/a>&nbsp;to help the project evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>prototype<\/strong>&nbsp;is a draft version of a work that allows you to explore your ideas and show the intention behind a design concept before investing time into development. It can be anything from a low-fidelity paper sketch to high-fidelity concept art to a final draft design. We&#8217;ll dive deeper into this in our next title.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_your_own_learning_resources\"><\/span>Finding your own learning resources<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Information wants to be free.<\/p>\n<cite>Attributed to Stewart Brand<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In his explorations of this meme-ish catchphrase, Roger Clark explains that no one knows the origin, but as a paraphrase of Brand&#8217;s statement, the attribution is accurate enough. Its ambiguity is its strength: it can be interpreted, as <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090622022512\/http:\/\/www.cs.georgetown.edu\/~denning\/hackers\/Hackers-NCSC.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richard Stallman asserts<\/a>, that &#8220;all generally useful information should be free. By &#8216;free&#8217; I am not referring to price, but rather to the freedom to copy the information and to adapt it to one&#8217;s own uses.&#8221; He makes the distinction between <em>gratis<\/em> (free of cost) and <em>libre<\/em> (liberated to share).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase has become a fundamental rallying cry for the free (<em>libre<\/em>) software and Open Source movements, It is the motivator for many knowledge base resources on the Web, including <strong>newMediaWiki<\/strong>. It supports the strong ethos of sharing we find in Open Education Resources, MOOCs, distributed culture, and chatrooms of all stripes (both beneficial and malevolent). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Learning_how_to_learn\"><\/span>Learning how to learn<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Because information is now so <em>libre<\/em> (and therefore often but not always <em>gratis<\/em>), this has changed how education happens. Professors are loathe to admit it, but it&#8217;s an open secret that they are no longer the gate-keepers to knowledge. If you want to know something, just \u201cgoogle it\u201d and presto, right? Who needs professors when \u201cDr. Google\u201d can bring the world to your fingertips? Dr. Google can do a lot, but it cannot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sort out more useful or reliable information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>distinguish real from fake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide mentorship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>exercise your critical thinking skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>give you critical feedback<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>and perhaps most importantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>teach you how to teach yourself<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My job at school is to model how to learn, and it&#8217;s also the goal of this wiki. Your job is to be an active partner in learning, not a passive sponge. Hence, heuristics is where you learn how to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heuristics is a phase where much skill-building happens. In the rest of newMediaWiki, this has been a curated process. For your student-directed project, you determine what you need. But this is hard to do unless you have some inkling of what is out there. The sea of information is vast, and there are many places where you can run aground. It helps to have a compass, sextant, and map. So without further ado, let&#8217;s set sail!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Video_and_other_tutorials\"><\/span>Video and other tutorials<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"YouTube_of_course_but%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>YouTube, of course, but&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone knows <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube<\/a><\/strong> is the place to go to learn anything (including stuff you don&#8217;t want to know!). While it is the acknowledged paragon of distributed culture, it\u2019s so un-curated that it can be the Wild West. There are so many <em>good tutorials<\/em> there! There are so many <em>bad tutorials<\/em> there! How to parse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, heuristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use a carefully crafted keyword search. If you type in &#8220;Blender&#8221; with the idea of finding tutorials for this open-source software, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/S_XmtrEEfhE?t=845\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you might get this instead<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look at data for views, subscribers, likes, etc. It&#8217;s not a perfect heuristic for guaranteeing quality, and the system can be gamed by unscrupulous authors, but it doesn&#8217;t hurt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t settle for the first thing you find. Dare to compare.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Software can change radically with updates. Be aware of posting dates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you find a useful tutorial, see if the author has a channel you can subscribe to. Just a few of my favorite reference and tutorial channels include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Prusa3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prusa3D<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@iphoneographers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iPhoneographers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@3DRevolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3D Revolution<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@designeducator\/videos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">xtine burrough<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@blenderguru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blender Guru<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_options\"><\/span>Other options<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Vimeo<\/strong><\/a> offers many tutorials and channels. It has a very good collection at <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/channels\/filmschool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Film School<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/blog\/category\/video-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vimeo Video School<\/a> for the budding cinematographer, among other options there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the West, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dailymotion<\/a><\/strong> is second only to YouTube in terms of sheer numbers (Aparat, while larger, focuses on Persian language content). You can find some good tutorials there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not many people think of short-form platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>TikTok<\/strong><\/a> as a place for tutorials but prepare for a surprise. Quick, one-off screen-cap how-to shorts without narration are legion. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@photoshop_tutoriais\/video\/7261928924756643078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here&#8217;s an example<\/a>. Just be aware: people&#8217;s idea of what good background music can be crazy, so mute the sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LinkedIn_Learning_and_other_walled_garden_services\"><\/span>LinkedIn Learning and other walled garden services<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond their generally user-hostile editing tools, my biggest critique of learning-management-system integration sites like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/corp.kaltura.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kaltura<\/a><\/strong> is that they live inside a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/searchsecurity\/definition\/walled-garden?Offer=abt_pubpro_AI-Insider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walled garden<\/a>. This is anathema to the concept of free culture we&#8217;re advocating here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why bother with these? Well, a major user of sites like <strong>newMediaWiki<\/strong> are students who have a relationship with an institution, and these schools often have institutional subscriptions which are available as part of the academic experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:67%\">\n<p>If you&#8217;re a student who has a free institutional account to a service like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/learning.linkedin.com\/cx\/get-started?src=go-pa&amp;trk=sem-ga_campid.17444416955_asid.138908484873_crid.484112882068_kw.linked%20in%20learning_d.c_tid.kwd-324270465588_n.g_mt.e_geo.9007322&amp;mcid=6940436762359984129&amp;cid=&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwz8emBhDrARIsANNJjS5TfxXNYsucwPPXW8My1gDmn-qoDFyuYMhjbXk2DyW6RmOY5Rw6RzMaAvZSEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn Learning<\/a><\/strong>, my suggestion is to <strong><em>milk it dry<\/em><\/strong> while you have that access. Use it every day that you can. These early boards evolved into the array of coding and programming helper sites we enjoy today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freecodecamp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freeCodeCamp<\/a><\/strong> is a non-profit organization that teaches people to program for free.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geeksforgeeks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geeks for Geeks<\/a><\/strong> provides free information on a variety of coding languages and other programming subjects.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codecademy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Codecademy<\/a><\/strong> is where you can learn by experimenting with code snippets and running them on your own, though not all content is free.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StackOverflow<\/a><\/strong> is the most popular social network for developers, and if you can only choose one, it&#8217;s the one you want to take with you to a desert island.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reddit<\/a><\/strong> is where you can find anything \u2014 including stuff you don&#8217;t want! \u2014 but serious coders are there. It&#8217;s as close to the old-school message board experience as you&#8217;ll find.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GitHub<\/a><\/strong> is a site where developers share code files and collaborate with fellow developers on open-source projects.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jsfiddle.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JSFiddle<\/a><\/strong> is a sandbox, where you can test your JavaScript, CSS, or HTML or online with&nbsp;a code editor.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/codepen.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CodePen<\/a><\/strong> is an amazing online community for testing and showcasing user-created HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code snippets.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/css-tricks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CSS-Tricks<\/strong><\/a> contains detailed, well-written articles with an emphasis on style. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is hardly a comprehensive list!
